Botulinum toxin type A, also known as Botox®, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and which leads to muscle paralysis.
Nowadays the active substance is produced by means of biotechnological procedures in a laboratory.
It inhibits the release of specific messenger substances from the nerve cells and thus interrupts the transmission of stimuli from the nerve to the muscle. After treatment, the muscle can be tightened neither consciously nor unconsciously, or only with great effort. All other functions of the neural cells like sensations of touch, temperature and pain however are preserved and unchanged.
- In medicine, Botulinum toxin is applied in the treatment of muscle cramps, bladder weakness, chronic headache and even hay fever.
- In aesthetic medicine the main application field is the treatment of wrinkles.
- Mimic wrinkles like forehead or frown lines and crow’s feet are due to a sustained tension of the respective facial muscles.
- A precisely performed injection of botulinum leads to a relaxation of the affected muscle fibres and the disappearance of the incommoding wrinkles.
- Through the obstruction of the transmission of stimuli to the sweat glands, botulinum can also be applied to the treatment of excessive underarm perspiration.
